Behind The Scenes
Clae Roberts

This piece is about domestic violence and the experiences we feel afterwards. I chose to make this piece extremely colourful to go against the dark themes. My work combines abstract expressionism with colourful painted figures. I like how my painting can be interpreted in different ways, some see the LGBT+ aspect, I did a male and female presenting figure to cement the fact domestic abuse can happen to anyone.

Open 5pm-8pm

Top of the Pops
Mark Barnes

I am a local artist and have had a keen interest in painting for the last decade.

My work is heavily influenced by pop culture, cinema and graffiti, I have loved these creative genres for as long as I can remember and love to create a fusion between them.

My father is a great artist who has inspired me on my painting journey since been very young.

Open 5pm-8pm

In addition there are Richard's pen and ink drawings, all made on location, showing some of the stalls: fruit & veg, the indoor meat market, clothing, bric-a-brac and toys, along with some of the cafes and snack bars.

The Gissing Centre will be open from 5pm to 9pm. It is accessed beyond the archway of Thompson's Yard on the right. The house has a plaque explaining that it is the childhood home of the novelist, George Gissing. The Centre is on the first floor up a flight of stairs.

Abstracted Landscapes
Martin Lewis

A selection of paintings by Wakefield-based artist Martin Lewis, back at The Pizza Yard for a second Artwalk. Creating abstract paintings inspired by the landscapes of Iceland and other locations, Martin seeks to uncover the underlying geometry of landscape through the use of simple shapes and line and exaggerated or altered colour. He paints mainly in oil, sometimes mixing it with sand to enhance texture, and often applied thickly with palette knife.

The Beauty Of Profanity
Daz Trei

The Beauty of Profanity is an exploration of ideas expressed via the medium of scrap paper and pen. Visitors to the pub are invited to doodle or write anonymously on anything they can find (scrap paper is provided) and I encourage the pen barer to be exquisitely unpolite if they wish. The celebrative works will be displayed for all to see on the night of the Artwalk, like Aunt Mavis's drawers on the washing line of profanity. Doodles and writings can be posted in a special profanity post box. This is located bottom right of the main Artwalk wall in the Polka Hop from Monday 21st October to Monday 25th November.

Free hot beverages available on Artwalk night with cakes, biscuits and all the usual pub fare and ales available until 11pm.

Open 12pm-11pm

Three Sets of Four Abstracts
HJP

In my exploration of abstract art, I aspire to create pieces that resonate with the viewer, evoking emotions that transcend the boundaries of language. Like a symphony, where color, line, and shape harmonize to convey a spectrum of feelings, inviting each observer to engage with their own memories and sensations, to connect on a level that can be both uplifting and introspective.

Mark making is an integral part of my process, as I embrace the freedom of form and the spontaneity it brings. I find beauty in the imperfections and the unexpected, allowing the work to evolve organically.

This freedom invites varied interpretations, enabling viewers to find their own meanings and connections within the chaos and calm of abstraction.

Open 5pm-9pm

Stirling's Odds & Sods
Stirling Ford

We have to remind Stirling that, although very humble, he is actually an artist. While he was excited to bring his vintage clothing to our snug, we had to insist that he also brought his fine art drawings. These will be on display, quite rightly, in our main stage area. Stirling is an underrated talent, and you'll see what we mean when you see his work.

Main stage & Snug
Open 7pm-11pm

Hearts Alive Showcase
Hearts Alive Tattoo studios

Original paintings & illustrations by 5 resident artists from the Hearts Alive Tattoo studio.
"By definition, a tattooist should be an artist but this is too often untrue. However, the team from Hearts Alive completely embolden what a tattooist should be. They're artists first and foremost, and this work on display demonstrates this" Daz, Polka Hop Landlord
The exhibition will be on display from Artwalk until mid December.

Upper Deck
Open 7pm-11pm

Looking For Sticks: 52 Poems for 52 Weeks

Mussarat Rahman

I am a Bradford Kashmiri artist with 18 years’ experience in delivering publicly funded community projects. My work focuses on developing innovative social action projects, using visual arts, photography, multimedia & holistic tools to facilitate discussion around global issues affecting displaced people across West Yorkshire, empowering culturally excluded communities.

As a woman artist of Pakistani heritage living in Bradford, I represent a significant demographic group in the community. I have created many artworks including a globe selected as part of ‘The World Reimagined’, a national installation of 103 unique globes exploring the history, legacy and future of the Transatlantic Trade in Enslaved Africans through the work of incredible artists. I won the Issachar Fund Art Prize in 2020 on the theme of Gratitude. In 2021, I was a recipient of the Queens Award for voluntary service.

Open 5pm-8pm

Self Reflection
Chelsea Turowski

My artwork is about self-reflection, as I wanted to create something personal that others can connect with. I want to recreate my feelings on my own reflection to see if people connect or feel the same about theirs. I wanted to share this idea because I feel most people feel ashamed to be themselves and don’t see their inner beauty but hate it instead. My inspiration for this artwork came from wanting to create a personal project and I wanted to showcase that its okay to have insecurities and not feel confident.

Open 5pm-8pm

Star Bereavement's Community Ofrenda

To celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in Mexico, people build ‘Ofrendas’ to remember friends, family and people of significance who they have lost. The word Ofrenda is Spanish for ‘offering’. Offerings take the form of displays with treasured photographs, flowers, candles, food and significant objects to mark the complex and beautiful lives of those who have died. Many traditions and faiths believe that people have passed on from this world to another.

Star Bereavement are bringing their Community Ofrenda to Wakefield Artwalk for the first time, having worked with children, young people and families on the Star Bereavement Ofrenda in community locations and drop in sessions throughout October. We invite you to join the conversation and ritual of memories and meaning to commemorate and celebrate our lost loved ones, bring your own offerings and/or join in with our Ofrenda activities including making paper flowers and candles to add to the Ofrenda.

By blending structured neural impressions with organic, flowing forms, the artist captures their interpretation of the duality of human cognition: intricate and interconnected yet abstract and spontaneous. Through emotion and movement, the artist reveals mental landscapes that reflect the creativity, diversity, and unpredictability of the brain - including the unique perspectives of the neurodiverse mind.

Bryan Mucheriwa

Bryan Mucheriwa's latest work The Long Walk, features several elements including The Bridge, Lost in the Wood, Shattered, Heartbroken, and the Lost Shoe. The work is a thoughtful reflection of the struggles faced by people who have to migrate to survive.
